Dive into a safer future with Stronghold ISR

WHAT IS ISR?

Thank you for your interest in Infant Swimming Resource and Stronghold ISR. Through the ISR Self-Rescue program, your child will learn specialized survival skills and build a foundation for a lifelong enjoyment of the water.

ISR Self-Rescue skills can and do, save lives. However, the number one defense against the leading cause of accidental death for children under the age of four is effective adult supervision. At ISR, we believe in a multi-layered approach to drowning prevention, which is why your child is not the only one who learns during lessons! Part of ISR’s comprehensive program involves education about specific ways you can protect your children from water hazards.

ONE-ON-ONE, PERSONALIZED INSTRUCTION

ISR lessons are one-on-one, and are customized to the developmental level and readiness of each child. Babies who can crawl -- generally six months to 15 months old -- learn to hold their breath underwater, roll onto their back to float, rest and breathe. Children who can walk -- generally 1.5 year of age and older (up through six years) -- learn to hold their breath under water, swim with their head down and eyes open, roll onto their back to float, rest and breathe, and roll back over to resume swimming until they reach the side of the pool and can crawl out.

Since statistics show that 86% of all children who drown are fully clothed at the time, during the final week of lessons, while under the watchful eye of an Instructor, each of our students have the opportunity to practice their ISR Self-Rescue™ skills in both their summer and winter clothes.

MORE ABOUT LESSONS

Lessons are taught year round at a variety of locations throughout Hillsboro, West and Cleburne.

Lessons are conducted Monday-Thursday for a maximum of 10 minutes each day. Sessions are on average, 6 weeks long. Some may finish sooner and some may take longer. Your child will have lessons 4 days a week unless in the refresher only session which is Monday - Friday. Each lesson is one-on-one. I do not offer group lessons as each lesson is customized for each child.

Weekly tuition is $110 which is paid via Zelle, Venmo, cash or check. ***If finances keep you from enrolling but you are committed to the program, PLEASE reach out to me. There is also an initial one-time national ISR registration fee of $105 that is due two weeks before your child’s lessons begin which is separate from weekly tuition. This fee is paid directly to ISR so that our medical team can evaluate each child to ensure they are safe to swim. From them I receive customized safety procedures to follow based on each child. Please reach out to me about payment plan options or bartering for services you may offer! Weekly tuition is due every Monday.

HOW MANY LESSONS WILL MY CHILD NEED

Children between 6 months and 1 years of age learn to hold their breath underwater and roll to their back and float, completely unassisted. These skills are mastered in an average of 6 weeks.

Children 2 years to 6 years of age immediately learn to hold their breath underwater and swim with their head down. From there they will learn to roll to their back to float, rest and breathe, then flip over to resume swimming, completely unassisted, until they reach the side of the pool, crawl out or be rescued by an adult. These skills are mastered in an average of 6 weeks. Please remember each child is different and specific skills can vary as to what they are willing to do.

THE ISR DIFFERENCE

Dr. Harvey Barnett, founder of ISR, has dedicated his life (academic and professional) to developing a safe, physiologically and psychologically sound method of teaching young children the skills that they need to survive an aquatic accident. Your child will not graduate until they have mastered the ISR Self-Rescue Technique.

An important distinction between ISR and other programs is our emphasis on safety before, during and after lessons. Prior to beginning lessons, your child’s unique medical history is reviewed by our team of medical professionals; doctors and nurses that in addition to their traditional skillset, are specifically trained to address how the bodies and minds of small children work in and with the water. The information gathered will help our medical team to identify any potential health issues that may affect your child’s lessons and safety. If needed, customized safety protocols will be introduced to ensure the safety of your child based on his/her specific medical needs.

During lessons, ISR’s safety protocols have allowed for more than 8 million lessons to be safely delivered by Certified ISR Instructors across the United States and even more throughout the world!

Your child is not the only one learning during lessons. ISR’s program includes comprehensive parent education on aquatic safety and drowning prevention.

FAQs
Why does it take an average of 6 weeks for my child to learn this?
The 6-week average is an estimate that is based on the average time in which it takes most children to learn these survival skills. Every child is unique and ISR’s Self- Rescue program is specifically designed based on your child’s individual strengths and needs. It is important to realize that this is an average which means that some children will actually finish more quickly while others will need more practice. ISR is dedicated to safety and, therefore, we want to provide your child with the time and best opportunity to become proficient in his/her survival skills. We will always honor your child’s needs.
Why don’t parents participate in the water during the lessons?
We do not want the baby to initially associate the water with the love, attention, and affection of the parent while in the water. Also, it takes incredible concentration and objectivity to teach the baby how to respond to an aquatic emergency and our experience shows that parents often find it too difficult to be objective to be effective teachers with their own children in the water. We gladly invite parents to join us in the pool once their child has independent skills to practice at home.
Will my child fear the water because of lessons?
There is an important difference between being fearful and being apprehensive because you are not yet skilled in a new environment. ISR is not like traditional swim lessons; it is a drowning prevention program that teaches survival swimming. Sometimes as a parent, you make choices for your child’s safety, like sitting in a car seat, because you know they are important. The same can be said for ISR. Fun can be defined as when skill meets challenge. Once competent in their skills, many children cannot be dragged away from the pool. They are having entirely too much FUN.
Why are lessons 5 days per week and for only 10 minutes?
The reason for this is multifaceted. First, repetition and consistency are crucial elements of learning for young children. Research shows that short, more frequent lessons result in higher retention. Second, most children have fairly short attention spans and will not be able to focus on the task for longer and we want to take advantage of the best time for learning. A third reason is that, though the pool temperature is maintained at 78-88 degrees, the temperature is still lower than your child's body temperature. Lessons are work and therefore will also be losing body heat. Instructors check students regularly for temperature fatigue since this is an indicator of physical fatigue.
